AdswoodIt was a pleasure having Carl Thomas in our school today. His assembly was amazing. Carl is double world champion and his presence in our Friday celebration assembly made it a really special event for the children, their parents and of course the staff.

Carl was able to demonstrate not only his own talents but his interactive approach enabled our children to display theirs, too. The assembly was all about self awareness and self discipline and the children were captured from start to finish because the message was put across by Carl via a truly hands-on approach.

Any school that promotes Mind Friendly Learning and Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL), needs to book Carl for an assembly as what we promote in school every day can so easily be reinforced and understood when someone with 'street cred', like Carl delivers the same message.

As a follow-up to the assembly, Carl sets every child a set of challenges regarding their behaviour in the home setting. Members of the family can support the child through the challenges and verify on a tick chart that each challenge has been met for the period of one week. Children seek sponsorship for completing the challenges to earn rewards for themselves and to raise money for the charity, Children's Safety Education Foundation. Citizenship at its very best!

I am writing to say how thankful we are that we took part in the Children Safety Education Foundation Self-Discipline Challenge. From the moment I spoke to you on the phone to arrange the initial assembly, and learnt about the challenge [which fully compliments the work we are doing on behaviour and self-discipline at the moment in school] and the great work the Foundation does, I knew this was something our school would love to take on.

The children enjoyed Carl's assembly so much they talked about it, animatedly, for a long time afterwards. They took the challenge very seriously. We had 62 returns [over half of the children in the school] and raised a fantastic total of £806.95! We support a great number of charities in our school and parents are always very generous, but we have never, ever raised anything like this amount! This is an absolute record for us. Unbelievably, one child raised a staggering £182!!

Parents have already commented on how their children enjoyed the challenge and some are even remembering to clean their teeth without being reminded!

If the money we raised helps our children to behave appropriately and helps the CSEF raise children's awareness of self-discipline and how to keep themselves safe, then we are proud to be part of it.

In his talk on Child Safety, Carl captured the children's attention. In a fun, lively session (including acrobatic flips!) he addressed issues regarding personal targets, self-motivation and self-control. In addition he introduced the children to strategies for dealing with bullying.

All the children were fully engaged, from the 4 year olds through to the 11 year olds and so motivated to complete the self-discipline tasks. Feedback from parents was very positive; they were impressed by the attitude of their children.

I would definitely recommend a visit from Carl, he is an excellent role model and an inspiration for the children.
