NEW SURVEY REVEALS THAT TECHNOLOGY IS A MAJOR INFLUENCE ON CHILDREN
A third of children feel that technology has the biggest influence on them according to a new survey.
Of 1000 children polled by annual initiative National Family Week, technology ranked higher than celebrities, traditional media and school with 32 per cent citing this as their main influence. However, parents, teachers and friends are still considered a greater influence.
The study, which also asked the opinions of 3000 parents on a number of family related matters, was conducted as part of National Family Week which runs from bank holiday Monday until 6th June.
The survey also revealed that ‘making the country safer’ is the number one thing that parents would change in the UK to make life better for families, with over a quarter naming this. In contrast, less than 20 per cent of children felt that this was the main issue, feeling that making schools better and helping families so that they have more money were more crucial.
National Family Week is an annual event aimed at highlighting the importance of families spending time together. Local Stockport charity, the Children’s Safety Education Foundation (CSEF) is supporting the programme of over 5000 events taking place across the UK during the week.
Patrick O’Malley, Head of Development, CSEF comments: “The figures from the National Family Week survey provide a useful insight into the family unit. Technology touches almost every aspect of modern life by revolutionising the way that we use and receive information each day. It is no surprise that it is influential and we have recently integrated digital technology into our safety programmes to reflect the evolving educational landscape. But there is no doubt that parents, teachers and friends still remain the most influential in a child’s life and the research has reinforced this. At CSEF, we cannot underestimate the importance of families in helping to impart and reinforce safety advice to children.”
